Mustangs of the Week

In honor of those student athletes who go above and beyond in spirit, determination, sportsmanship and skill development, coaches nominate a Mustang of the Week. Here, you can read about our current athletes and their contributions to their team and to their school.

WEEK OF February 23

Abby Roberson
Abby has been an impact player all season long for the girls varsity hockey team. She has been an offensive defender who has contributed on the scoresheet in a number of games. This past weekend, Abby scored the go-ahead goal against Hoosac, and she also recorded two assists to help the Mustangs secure a 6-4 win in their final game of the season. All winter, Abby has played with poise, intelligence, and confidence.


Winston Walter
At the Class E New England championship this weekend, Winston went 3-for-3 and helped lead the team to a third-place finish. After winning his first match on Saturday 3-0 to help his team advance to the semifinals, Winston notched the sole victory against St. Sebastian later that afternoon. In the third-place playoff match against St. Luke's on Sunday morning, Winston took to the courts with the Mustangs up 3-1 in matches. Cool, calm, and collected, he won 3-0 despite the pressure and produced some of his best squash this season.

Zoe Bloxam
This past weekend at the U.S. Squash National Tournament, Zoe had a fantastic weekend, going 4-0 to help the Mustangs reach the finals in their division. Overall, Zoe has held down the #7 position and achieved a winning record on the season. She has shown admirable sportsmanship and a genuine desire to improve while being a supportive teammate. Congratulations, Zoe!


Francisco Santana
Francisco has been a consistent contributor for the Mustangs all season and has continued to play an important role on both ends of the floor. He recorded a strong performance on Saturday, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the team’s big home win over Marianapolis Prep. Congratulations to Francisco on a great week and for his steady impact throughout the season.

Cindy Diarra
Cindy has been an impact player for the girls varsity basketball team all winter. As the team’s center, Cindy has consistently dominated on both ends of the court, and this past week was no exception. She delivered an outstanding performance against Miss Hall’s on Wednesday, scoring 29 points and leading the offense with confidence and control. She followed that up with another strong showing against Suffield, adding 14 points while continuing to be the team’s anchor inside the paint. Defensively, she has been one of the team’s strongest players, protecting the rim, rebounding aggressively, and setting the tone with her intensity.


Andre Stanton
Andre led the Mustangs to a 1–1 week as the team continues to jockey for playoff positioning in the NEPSAC Tournament. Andre had an outstanding performance in a big road win over Kent School, finishing the game with 16 points and 9 rebounds. He also shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the three-point line, including timely baskets that gave the Mustangs momentum when it mattered most. Congratulations, Andre, on a strong week and continued leadership for the Mustangs.

Maja Wielgos
Maja performed well this past week for the GV hockey team. Her impact was most felt this past Saturday with a big goal against Choate helping the girls secure an impressive 2-1 win at Choate. All winter, Maja has demonstrated an impressive work ethic, constantly pushing her teammates to be their very best.


Malkin Pierre
This past week Malkin helped the BV hockey team go 2-1 with two important wins at NMH and home against Williston. It was Malkin’s game on Wednesday that was most impressive as he scored the Mustangs only two goals in the low scoring contest. It was his goal in OT with just 12 seconds to play that secured the win for the Mustangs.

Tiyara Gonzalez
Tiyara has been a dominant force this winter for the girls varsity basketball team. Offensively, she has been an important part of the team, averaging 20 points per game and helping set the offensive tone each contest. She’s also been strong on defense, bringing consistent energy and grit to that side of the ball.


Max Dreyfus
Max earned the sole victory for the Mustangs on Saturday against Pomfret. After going up 2-0 by relying on his athleticism and some basic squash shots, Max’s opponent came back to win the next two games 11-8 and 13-11 to force a fifth game. In the fifth game, Max's desire for victory was evident the second he won serve. He won handily, 11-3 to take his match 3-2 against a talented Pomfret opponent.

Lily Kennedy
Lily was an important offensive contributor in the Mustangs' two wins last week against Tilton and GCDS, scoring in both games. All winter, Lily has been an impactful player for the GV hockey team. More importantly, Lily has also been a true team player who consistently supports her teammates on and off the ice.


Hezi McCoy
Hezi led the Mustangs to a 1-1 week, highlighted by an impressive performance against Class B foe St. Luke’s. In Saturday’s big win against St. Luke’s, he finished with 24 points and 8 rebounds, including a clutch three-pointer late in the game to solidify the Mustangs' lead.
WEEK OF January 5

Abby Swon
Abby leads the girls varsity squash team with a 3-1 record and has approached each practice and match with focus and positive energy. This past Saturday, Abby beat her opponent from Kingswood-Oxford 3-0, allowing her opponent only two points in the entire match. Before the break, Abby was also the only one to pick up a win against a strong Sacred Heart team (she won her match 3-0). Abby is a hard worker and has shown a lot of improvement already this season.


Andrew Moawad
In two games last week, Andrew stopped 58 out of 62 shots, earning a .935 save percentage. On Wednesday, he was a driving force in the team’s big home win against rival Berkshire, 3-2, stopping 33 out of 35 shots and making some momentum-changing saves throughout. Andrew had another strong performance on Friday at Hotchkiss, stopping 25 out of 27 shots and giving the team a chance to win.

Kate Rubinstein
Kate was strong in net last week for the girls varsity hockey team, helping the Mustangs pick up two very important victories. In the team’s games against Portledge and St. George’s, Kate made some game-changing saves to help preserve the wins. Her calm and confident demeanor in net has been a real strength for the team so far.


Sam Gero
Sam has been one of the offensive catalysts for the boys varsity hockey team, averaging over a point per game in the team’s first four games. On Saturday night, in the team’s 3-2 win over Lawrenceville, Sam picked up a goal and an assist, but more importantly, he set the tone for the Mustangs as he was consistently around the puck and creating scoring opportunities all night for his teammates.

Vivian Rosen
Vivian had a terrific game against Pomfret in the team’s big win on Saturday. It was only Vivian’s fourth time playing as libero, and she was exceptional. Defensively, she dug in and kept the play alive for her team on numerous occasions. In her serve and receive game, Vivian’s passes were accurate allowing the Mustang's to set the ball beautifully for their attackers.
King Kumahlor
King was an absolute force this past Saturday in the football team’s dominant win over Pomfret. Defensively he had two blocked punts, one of which was returned for a TD, a strip sack, and 2 fumble recoveries. These big plays helped the Mustangs keep the momentum at key points during the team’s 40-20 win over Pomfret.

Stella Renzi
All fall Stella has been the glue in the midfield for girls varsity soccer. This past week, Stella played a major role in the team’s tie at Kingswood Oxford and more recently in the team’s 3-0 win over Holy Child on Saturday. On Saturday, Stella controlled the midfield, helping to shut down Holy Child’s midfield, while distributing the ball to her teammates. In short, Stella has been that two-way player who can make things happen both offensively and defensively. Congratulations, Stella.
Cooper McGuire
Despite never playing goalie before, Cooper stepped into the net for the boys varsity soccer team three games ago when his team needed him most. Cooper has been a quick learner and fierce competitor, and he has made some fantastic saves since taking over the goal. He was crucial in the team’s big wins this fall over Salisbury and Brunswick. It takes a lot of grit to step into such a high-pressure role, and Cooper has been terrific.

Lucy Stettinius
Lucy had an amazing game this past Saturday against Wilbraham and Monson leading the Mustangs to an impressive 5-0 victory. Lucy played a great game both in the midfield and in high attack scoring 4 of the team’s 5 goals. Her strong left hand has made her a force to be reckoned with all season, allowing her to move around defenders and drive the goal with ease.
Marcus Paul
All fall, Marcus has been a key player in BVS midfield, helping to connect the team’s defense with their offense. Marcus has scored some big goals in his Millbrook career but none bigger than against Salisbury under the lights. With a minute and a half left in a tied game, Marcus hit a perfect free kick from 30 yards out that found the back of the net, helping his team secure a huge win.

Lilly Ainley
Lilly has been an invaluable player on the field hockey team this fall. Her tireless work ethic has been evident in each minute of each game. Whether playing at midfield or on high attack, she consistently hustles for the ball and displays great stick skills that help her track down every ball. Her determination was highlighted in a recent game against Frederick Gunn, when she scored a beautiful goal.
Francis Bonsu
Francis has not only brought a tremendous skill set to BVS this fall, but he’s also brought a work ethic to match. Since the first practice of the season, Francis has provided a model of tenacity that continuously inspires others. This past week, Francis scored two goals in the team’s win against Wilbraham, and he scored the team’s only two goals on Saturday against Gunn.

Jazmin Mejia
Since the first day of practice, Jazmin has had an impact on the girls’ soccer team. While the team has had its ups and downs this fall, Jazmin has worked tirelessly in the midfield. As a central midfielder, she’s been a consistent offensive threat, while at the same time supporting the team’s backline. Jazmin’s technical skill and strong game sense has already helped the team improve.
Alex Drury
Alex has been consistently impactful on both sides of the ball on the football team since the first day of practice. Offensively he’s been a leader in the running game, earning three TDs on the season so far. Defensively, as an MLB on the team, his ability to read, get to the play, and consistently make tackles has been a big part of the team’s success.

Andrea Sassatelli
In her first time running on the Millbrook cross-country course, Andrea, in the first mile of the race, ran a sub-six minute mile against FGS and Sacred Heart. Already over a minute ahead of the field at that point, Andrea pushed forward, ultimately setting a new course record for Millbrook girls in 19:50 and taking home first place. 

It was a gutsy performance and suggests just how exciting this young runner’s career will be. Andy has been bringing her intensity to practice every day and is a terrific teammate.
Oliver Fauver
This past Saturday, Ollie took first place in Millbrook’s first cross-country home meet with a time of 20:59. He bested the second-place Frederick Gunn runner by 13 seconds. His first-place showing helped the Mustangs win the meet overall, 26-30. Ollie has emerged as a quiet, respectful, and spirited leader on the team this season.

Haley Malmgren
Haley had a tremendous volleyball game on Saturday, helping the Mustangs pick up their second win of the season at Harvey. With the Mustangs down two sets to none, Haley fueled a comeback with her consistent serving, allowing the team to settle in and find their game. Haley has also been a great leader on the team. Her positive attitude has had a huge impact, and that attitude ultimately contributed to the win on Saturday.
Oliver Hougland
Oliver has been a real catalyst in the midfield on boys varsity soccer this fall. He has played almost every minute as a center midfielder in some tough, physical games, keeping the group organized even when some key players were out of the lineup. On Saturday, Oliver was instrumental in the team’s 6-0 win at King, picking up one of the most beautiful goals in the season so far.
