Student Leaders Embody School Culture
Student leaders are an integral part of what makes Millbrook, Millbrook. Providing invaluable support to the adults on campus, these leaders include prefects, peer supporters, DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion & belonging) leaders, head farmers, dorm leaders, and zoo curators.
After a rigorous orientation in the week leading up to the first day of class paved the way, student leadership has helped Millbrook start the 2024-2025 academic year on a high note. Zoumana Traore ‘25 is a dorm leader in Case Hall and one of six prefects elected by the student body. He’s noticed a general air of optimism while carrying out his student-leader duties at Millbrook. “Leadership is going well,” he said. “I see a lot of smiles and just an overall positive mood on campus.”
Zooming in on how student leaders are guiding their specific groups reveals the reason for the good vibes. Just ask Lucy Stettinius ’26, a dorm leader in Guest House. “I have been seeing a lot of good bonding between the student leaders and younger students, whether they are new or returning,” She noted. “In Guest House, all of us have been spending a lot of time together in the common room, helping us to create a positive dorm culture.”
Similarly, DEIB leader Angelina Edwards ’26 offered insight into how she and other student leaders used their influence to prevent cliques in Abbott Hall and build a foundation of inclusivity for the year ahead. “People actually started talking, asking each other to go to breakfast,” she said. “I was excited to see it unfold because my freshman year it wasn’t really like that—it was more cliquey. So now I’m so happy to see everyone asking each other to go to eat together and knocking on each other’s doors. It’s really fun.”
Dorm life can make or break a student’s boarding school experience. Millbrook places great responsibility on its student leaders, asking them to foster a welcoming, inclusive environment. Fortunately, those leaders are proving that they’re up to the challenge.
The students aren’t the only constituency on campus filled with optimism regarding how leadership is guiding the Millbrook community. Devandria Bernard, head dorm parent in Prum Hall, is also impressed with how the year has started. “The student leaders have really bought into this year’s core value of respect. I think they’re ready to go. I think that they’re going to embody school culture this year, and I’m excited to see what they’ve got in store.”
Edwards provided solid evidence that student leaders have gone all in on respect. “I feel like the leaders are being more active toward one another,” she offered. “We’re actually listening and trying to hear each other out, rather than trying to push our own agendas. I feel like that’s really helping shape the culture in a good way.”
