Black & Latinx BBQ Provides a Taste of Home

Millbrook School held it’s bi-annual Black and Latinx barbecue recently, bringing together community members for a night of relationship-building between current students, faculty, and alumni. The event was a rousing success!

The group gathered in Anthony House for the first time this year, enjoying party games inside and making s’mores around a firepit on the terrace. In previous years, the event was held in a tent on the athletic fields. Moving the barbecue to a new venue proved to be a perfect choice, according to Millbrook’s Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Patrice King.

“Anthony House had more of a living room type feel to it, which was really nice,” she explained. “It allowed us to gather like a little family and eat and tell stories and play some games, so it was definitely a good move in terms of location.”

Another highlight from the event was the food. ARAMARK Chef Joanna Garcia invited her mother to make the trip to Millbrook and help her cater the gathering. That personal touch resulted in a home-cooked feast, which was especially meaningful for students living far from home.

Attendance at the barbecue was excellent, despite some students missing due to athletic commitments. The food, company, and all-around good times attracted over 20 students, faculty, and alumni. King said she hopes to adjust the timing of the event in the future so that even more people can attend.

Based on the success of the latest iteration of Millbrook’s Black and Latinx barbecue, next semester’s gathering is sure to draw even more members of the community in for a good time with great eats and lasting memories.
