Embracing Millbrook’s proximity to great art and opportunities, the 2024 art field trips were fun and inspiring for the 80 or so student artists who hit the road. Tyler Gundrum chaperoned ceramicists to the Noguchi Museum and MoMa PS1 in Queens. Kiernan Pazdar brought her honors painters on a multi-stop tour of fantastic Hudson Valley arts venues. The class visited Vassar’s Frances Loeb Center at Vassar to see their Hudson River school paintings and their Rothko. The next stop was a studio visit with artist and professor Kerry Downey where they talked about their work and abstraction. Rounding out the day was the Bard Hessel Museum followed by pizza at Kiernan’s studio. Elaine Lifter’s thespians visited Magnet Theater in New York City. Singers and musicians visited nearby Dutchess Day School and performed for fifth, sixth, and seventh graders.
In place of a field trip, photographers in Sarah MacWright’s experimental photo class participated in spring varsity sports media day, putting their skills to work capturing fun images for Mustang athletes. The mass photo shoot featured several stations with different lighting and backdrops for varsity athletes to pose for photos.
Arts field trips allow Millbrook’s student artists to connect with the wider world of the arts in the Hudson Valley and beyond. Holbrook’s faculty of working artists always seek to broaden horizons.
