A loud noise from the north end of campus Thursday morning was no cause for alarm.
The commotion at the Farm resulted from the annual relocation of Millbrook’s moveable greenhouse. Built on a track with wheels at the end of each hoop, the greenhouse easily—but noisily—rolls from growing area to growing area.
Thursday, students in the Farm Community Service group lined both sides of the greenhouse. Led by Farm Program Director Lyuda Pope, the crew pushed the greenhouse into place.
Moving the greenhouse each year helps recharge the soil by letting it interact with the elements. For example, when the temperature drops below freezing, soil picks up needed carbon from dead plants.
Despite winter looming less than two months away, the Farm will continue producing food for the community. Whether that produce ends up in the salad bar at the dining hall or on the dinner table at a faculty residence, it’s helping Millbrook live out one of its core values: stewardship of the natural environment.
