Trevor Zoo Earns Accreditation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums
Millbrook is thrilled to share that our very own Trevor Zoo has earned accreditation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA).
Founded in 1924, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, animal welfare, education, science, and recreation. AZA is the accrediting body for the top zoos and aquariums in the United States and eight other countries.
In order to maintain AZA membership, zoos and aquariums must successfully complete a rigorous accreditation process every five years, which includes meeting standards for animal care, veterinary programs, conservation education, and safety.
The Trevor Zoo had to apply for accreditation to be renewed, as well as participate in a meticulous on-site inspection, and interviews with the AZA's Accreditation Commission.
The Trevor Zoo is one of only 231 zoos and aquariums in the United States to earn accreditation, and it is the only accredited zoo on a high school campus in the country. Its founder, Frank Trevor, was Millbrook School’s first biology teacher, and a man with a passion for sharing his love of wildlife with all people.
And there are plenty of other interesting facts about the Trevor Zoo: - It houses more than 180 exotic and indigenous animals - 80 different species are represented - It is home to 9 endangered species - Its facilities extended over 6 acres - It operates a veterinary clinic
The Trevor Zoo provides a unique opportunity for Millbrook students to work directly with wildlife. More than 70 students assist Trevor Zoo staff in all aspects of the daily operation of the zoo, including animal husbandry, landscaping, interacting with visitors, and collecting behavioral data on the collection. Students also observe veterinary procedures, and learn about endangered species conservation efforts.
“The Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredits only those zoos and aquariums that meet the highest standards. By achieving AZA-accreditation, Trevor Zoo demonstrates that it is dedicated to protecting species and educating its visitors about the natural world,” said AZA Interim President and CEO Kris Vehrs.
