Boys Varsity Squash Head Coach Jasper Turner shares all the details of the boys’ triumph in NEPSAC Class E at Pomfret:
Millbrook Boys Varsity Squash headed to Pomfret, CT this weekend to compete in the Class E New England Championship. After a 7-0 win Saturday morning against King School, Millbrook faced Portsmouth Abbey in the semifinal match that afternoon. As our 2, 4, 6, and 8 rostered players took to the courts for warmups, we realized this could be a very close match. #2 Milo Stephenson and #4 Johnny Zhang both fell 0-3 against talented opponents. #8 Luke Sosnow was dominant in his first match of the tournament in the exhibition round, winning 11-8, 11-2, 11-2. At the #6 spot, Cooper McGuire dropped his first game 4-11 but quickly figured out how to move his opponent around the court and won the next three 11-9, 12-10, 11-5 to earn Millbrook its first win. Down 2-1 after the evens finished, Millbrook's remaining players took to the courts. #1 Sutter Schwartz took some time to realize he could hold his own against his opponent and, while ultimately falling 0-3, worked to 8-11 in the third game and played some phenomenal points. #5 Jack Nestler was consistent all weekend and earned a quick 3-0 victory.
That left Millbrook down 2-3 with #3 Jackson Colman and #7 Dirky Rosse still on the courts. We needed to win both and Dirky did so with gusto, winning the fifth game 11-6 to draw Millbrook even. With all eyes on Jackson at #3, he figured out a way to cement the victory with some deceptive and deep crosscourts that kept his opponent off balance. He prevailed 3-1. After a much-needed rest Saturday, we took to the courts Sunday afternoon for the final against Concord Academy, a team that had upset the #3 and #2 seeds on their path to the final. While some of the games were close, Millbrook entered the day buoyed by their defeat of Portsmouth Abbey and had the confidence and composure to earn a convincing 7-0 victory.
