The energy in the great green room at the New York Racquet and Tennis Club was palpable. The many Millbrook alumni in attendance were clearly eager for this long-awaited opportunity to connect with Millbrook classmates and friends and get a brief update on their school.
The room was nearly full at 6:30 p.m., the very start of the event held on Tuesday, November 2, and Headmaster Jonathan Downs '98 kicked off the evening shortly thereafter with a tribute to faculty and a reading of the opening of Founding Headmaster Edward Pulling's
Project for a New School:
The first Principle to be kept in mind is this:
That bricks and mortar and money and even sound educational theory in building a school are no substitutes for the personalities of the teachers; that the spirit of the institution and its ultimate value will, in the last analysis, depend essentially on the quality of the faculty.
This segued perfectly into very brief introductions from several faculty members who shared their current roles at Millbrook, their challenges, and their inspirations. Dean of Faculty Jasper Turner, Admission Director Meghan Grover, Director of Athletics Vinnie Sorriento, Director of Counseling Sarah Stanton LCSW '89, DEI Director Prince Botchway, Director of Leadership Giving Dan Skoglund, Director of College Counseling Shannon Vollmer, and Admission Associate and Abbott Dorm Head Emily Allen spoke about the current state of programs and progress at Millbrook and how we're continuing to adjust as the COVID pandemic still impacts our day-to-day routines.
For two full hours, alumni and faculty in attendance chatted and laughed and, yes, hugged in a room full of happy people who had provided proof of vaccination. It was a reunion, a moment to celebrate the first return to alumni gatherings with the expectation that there will be many more to come this year.
The largest of those gatherings will be the triple reunion on Millbrook's campus in June:
