Lawyer & Economic Policy Advisor
Leland Smith is an international lawyer, economic policy advisor, and former U.S. Army officer who led troops on the ground in Iraq. He is also a proud graduate of Millbrook's Class of 2003, and he remains in close contact with classmates to this day!
Driven by curiosity and a desire to serve, Leland has gained a wide variety of experiences through which he applies lessons learned to his current role. His first-hand knowledge from helping rebuild local economies in Iraq, transporting and selling crude oil on the trading floor at Shell Oil, selling large real estate portfolios as an investment banker, and issuing sovereign debt to finance countries' budgets gives him a unique perspective of global markets and the forces that drive them. This work has allowed him to advise key market players as to systemic financial risk and conservation efforts.
In a pro bono capacity, Leland has represented immigrants to the United States and led non-profit formation efforts. His publications help explain his many lessons learned to others. Leland holds a Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy at West Point, a Master of Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island, and a Juris Doctor from the Georgetown University Law Center. He lives in Arlington, Virginia, with his wife, son, and two dogs.
