BV Squash Wins Second-Straight NEPSAC Class D Championship

Millbrook’s boys varsity squash team headed to Rhode Island this past weekend for the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) squash tournament at Portsmouth Abbey. They returned as NEPSAC Class D champions!

The Mustangs beat Westminster, Suffield, and Trinity-Pawling to win the tournament, defeating each opponent 4–3 and bringing a second-consecutive Class D title home to Millbrook. The victory capped a busy couple of weeks for the team, as they had also traveled to Philadelphia the weekend prior for Nationals, placing third in their division.

Coach Tyler Gundrum said his squad was cautiously confident heading into the NEPSAC tournament. “We had beaten all the teams we played before,” he explained. “So, going into the tournament we were saying, ‘We can beat these people, but if someone has a tough day or someone gets injured—God forbid—we could easily lose it.’ Nothing was guaranteed going in.”

Fortunately, everything went the Mustangs’ way, as the boys built on their previous experience to take care of business. The championship coming against Trinity-Pawling was fitting, as Gundrum was coaching against his high school team and coach, Frank Fritts. Also, the Millbrook and Trinity-Pawling players are all friends, thanks to squash and their upstate NY roots.

The victory was also a perfect ending to most of the players’ Millbrook squash careers, as the squad features only one underformer. But that underformer is Hector Stephenson ’26, who went 3–0 in the tournament to win Mustang of the Week honors and hint that, despite high turnover, the future is bright for Millbrook boys squash.

“All in all this is a team of players who are moving on from the program, so the final moments for them at Millbrook to be a moment of success was huge,” Gundrum said. “It’s definitely a lot to travel around so much for a sport, but to do so in the winners’ circle feels a heck of a lot better than it does in the losers’ circle.”
