Model UN Saves World from Zombies

The Millbrook Model UN club welcomed local middle schoolers from Indian Mountain School and Dutchess Day School for the third annual Millbrook Model UN conference on Sunday. More than 60 attendees took a crack at solving the world’s problems—including saving humanity from zombies.

This year’s event featured three committees, which met in the Hamilton Math and Science Center and the Holbrook Arts Center. The Crisis Committee staved off a hypothetical zombie attack while the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) tackled global education, and the World Health Organization (WHO) handled water sanitation.

Students from each group received awards for their world-saving proposals in the Chelsea Morrison Theater at the end of the day.

Model UN Club President Grace Bellin ’27 organized the event with help from Mosie Pennington ’27 and faculty members Owen Kelley ‘17, Mitch Kastilahn, Jeff Smith, Kathy Havard, and Theresa Pearson. Bellin inherited the Model UN club from her sister, Christina Bellin ’24, who began the tradition of inviting IMS and DDS students to participate.

After losing the club vice president over the summer, Grace has been doing an awesome job of running the group by herself in what she termed a “transition year”—and Sunday’s Model UN conference is proof.

“I thought it was a ton of fun,” Bellin said. “We ended up saving the world from a zombie apocalypse, and I think that some good resolutions were made in the global education committee. … I heard from a lot of students from DDS, that they had fun, which is good!”

Congratulations to Bellin and her crew for leading another successful Model UN. We look forward to watching them save the world again next year!
