Millbrook Alumni Unite at Republican National Convention
Arthur Anthony and Carly McWilliams
Arthur Anthony '07 grew up at Millbrook (dad is Bob Anthony '65,
Director of Development/Alumni Affairs), graduated from Millbrook, and
is currently working as an intern in the Development Office. Carly
McWilliams' ('05) story is much the same, and she was recently on
campus introducing her father (Rick McWilliams, longtime Athletic
Director and current art faculty) before his chapel talk. Carly and
Arthur, along with Gordon Pennoyer '99, shared another tremendous
experience this past summer and fall as they worked together at the
2008 Republican National Convention. They share their story here.
Gordon, who had previously worked on the 2004 Convention in New York
City, served as the Deputy Director of Media Operations and was
responsible for convention media coverage. Arthur worked as Gordon’s
intern and had a range of responsibilities including organizing media
workspaces, researching bloggers, and assisting with the Media Guide.
Carly worked for the Director of Operations, Mike Miller, and was
involved in many elements of the operations division including
assisting Gordon in Media operations and working closely with both the
communications department and the head contractor from Freeman Company.
According to Gordon, “the convention was by all measures an enormous
success and there is no doubt that individuals from Millbrook played
important roles in such a monumental and historic event.”
The week of September 1, 2008 was enormously memorable and significant
for all those attending the convention, the Republican Party, and the
nation as a whole. On the final night of the convention, the night of
John McCain’s acceptance speech, Carly, Arthur, and Gordon were joined
by Bob Anthony (’65), his wife Ann, youngest daughter Sarah (’12), and
friend Joerg Fiebiger (’97). In addition, Gerry Mullany (’80),
attended the convention in a different capacity, covering the election
for the New York Times.
Gordon and Arthur's convention experience lead them to the McCain
campaign trail. Arthur spent two months in Blue Bell, PA while Gordon
worked in a field office in Iowa. Carly volunteered her service in
Albuquerque, NM during election week.
Every member from the Millbrook family involved in the Convention,
regardless of the capacity, found their experience to be both memorable
and invaluable.
