Millbrook Takes on Challenge 20/20

Sponsored by the National Association of Independent Schools, Challenge 20/20 "is an Internet-based program that pairs classes at any grade level (K-12) from schools in the U.S. with their counterpart classes in schools in other countries; together the teams tackle real global problems to find solutions that can be implemented at the local level and in their own communities." (www.nais.org) Millbrook has enthusiastically joined the challenge and is currently working with two other schools to address the issue of global warming by designing several creative and educational solutions that can be implemented not only locally, but globally.

Mr. Pascale Musto, an active member in the NAIS, suggested the Challenge 20/20 to the members of his History of Dissent class, a senior elective that is being offered for the 2nd year in a row. Students were excited to collaborate and found out shortly after the start of the school year that they would be working with other students in Oklahoma and Shanghai. Two members of the class, Kelly Fallon '10 and Matt Job '10, were eager to talk about the project and the progress they have made:
Our goal is to educate others that global warming is a factor. Within our class, we are working in groups of 3 or 4 to design educational tools such as children's books, posters, stickers, bumper stickers, charts, and an online game. Our children's book, for example, tells the story of a polar bear, Frosty, who lives in Antarctica. His home is melting, so he travels to the U.S. to convince people that they should carpool to avoid putting more greenhouse gases into the air.
While independently researching the data and information behind global warming, since October Millbrook students have been in touch with their counterparts in Oklahoma City and Shanghai to compare ideas and share research via their own Ning page and online chats.

After preparing a report that details the team's solutions and experience through the end of the first semester, the next step will be to produce the tools they have envisioned and find a vehicle for delivering them within the community. A final comprehensive report along with any supplemental materials is due by May 3rd. We'll provide updates and more information as the Challenge progresses!
