Millbrook Hosts Second Annual Golden Lips A cappella Competition

Millbrook welcomed Kent, Berkshire, and Cheshire Academy, to the Chelsea Morrison Theater in April for the second annual Golden Lips competition on April 12th. Chesire Academy’s, The 1794's, won this year’s competition under the direction of Eunyoung DiGiacomo.

Golden Lips, which is the creation of Vocal Music Director Joe Raciti, has become a much-anticipated campus event since its exciting and successful launch last year.

“I wanted to create an event that really felt like it was designed for the students,” says Mr. Raciti. “The goal was to bring different schools together to give our vocal performers an opportunity to perform for their peers in a fun, theatrical environment, while also participating in friendly competition.”

The Millbrook singers learned two tunes and accompanying choreography for the competition. Wireless microphones were also used for this year’s event, which gave the performers the opportunity to hone their skills using professional equipment and more freedom to be creative and engaging with movement.

Beyond the student acts, there was also a surprise headline performance from Highline Vocal Jazz, a quintet from Brooklyn, NY, that is committed to continuing the vocal jazz tradition established by groups like Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, and New York Voices.

"I was blown away by the high quality of the performances,” says Mr. Raciti. All of the groups shared well-practiced harmonies, which were complemented by engaging, tight choreography. “The audience was well-considered by all six competing groups and the results were spectacular."
