Millbrook held its annual Women’s Dinner on Tuesday night at the Cosmopolitan Club in New York City. This year’s event was hosted by Carolina A. Wamsler ’87 and featured a keynote speech by Director of Philanthropy at the Trevor Zoo Nancy Stahl, who, along with Wamsler and former Millbrook administrator Cindy McWilliams founded the Women’s Dinner in 2014.

After attending various independent schools, Nancy went to Hollins University, where she studied art history. She then began her career at Sotheby’s in New York City, eventually rising to lead the Bids and Reserve Department and meeting her husband, Bill, who also worked for the renowned auction company. When their daughter, Jacqueline, started school, the Stahls moved to Millbrook. Nancy’s drive to support education led her to the board of Dutchess Day School and eventually to Millbrook School, joining as a part-time major gifts officer and eventually leading the Advancement Office before transitioning to her current role with the Trevor Zoo this year.

In her speech, Nancy shared about how the strong women in her family paved the way for her career in philanthropy, from her grandmother—who supported healthcare accessibility in Cleveland and raised funds for Case Western Reserve University—to her aunts and mother. She also thanked the many other women who laid a foundation that enabled her to get to where she is today.

“I want to turn back again to the woman who inspired me, my own family, women on the boards I was involved with, and all the women before me who were pioneers in the twentieth century, starting museums, influencing education, healthcare, land conservancy, and equal rights,” she said. “They were ahead of the curve and paved the way for all of us. We learned by example, and these strong women opened doors in an era when men often stole the spotlight.”

This annual tradition is an important way to honor the many women who have helped make Millbrook one of the top independent boarding schools in the country. We look forward to gathering again next spring!
