Millbrook School is known for its commitment to environmental sustainability through its core value of stewardship. So, when Earth Day rolls around each year, the entire community pitches in to celebrate it as a weeklong event. This year’s theme was “Our Power, Our Planet,” and the community did everything in its power to bring attention to the needs of our planet through various activities and interactive displays.
Monday and Friday Assemblies featured environmental-themed music and videos, including a presentation by the DEIB student leaders on environmental justice. Also, the dining hall hosted display tables during lunch: a zoo conservation display from the Trevor Zoo that included shade-grown coffee tasting and a naturalist-themed table with field guidebooks and binoculars that students were encouraged to borrow for closeup views of the diverse natural resources on our 800-acre campus. A few brave students even woke up early for a hike at the neighboring Riga Meadow Farm to watch the sunrise:
The highlight of the celebration came on Tuesday when sports teams cancelled their practices and spent the afternoon cleaning up campus. Groups of students spread out across campus and the surrounding areas, cleaning up trash along the road and clearing brush. After the cleanup, the community enjoyed a picnic with local food and browsed a Milly Thrift sidewalk sale, helping reduce textile waste by purchasing used clothing.
Director of Stewardship & Sustainability Leigh Schmitt led the efforts throughout the week. “Overall, it was a great week for Earth Week at Millbrook School. This was the first week that actually felt like spring, so we were beyond blessed with the weather,” he said. “The roadside and community cleanup on Tuesday was a big success—lots of smiles and hard work by spring sports teams to leave spaces and places better than we found them!”
Schmitt thanked everyone in the community—especially the students from his Environmental Council who were instrumental in planning and executing the events—for helping to make Earth Week the positive experience it always is.
“This year, I was particularly grateful for the support and collaboration across the curriculum to join in on the Earth Day values and ethos,” he said. “Teamwork makes the dream work, and this was the case for Earth Week.”
