Mustangs Fall to Wilbraham in Extra Innings

The Millbrook Varsity Softball team fought valiantly but lost at Wilbraham, 23-22, in extra innings. It was a back-and-forth affair the whole time, with each team locked in offensively. The Mustangs jumped out to 7-1 lead before the Titans clawed back a number of runs to go up 10-7. After five innings, Wilbraham led 20-13. The Mustangs roared back in the top of the sixth, plating eight (including a three-run bomb over the centerfield fence by Nikki Bessinger ‘21) to go up, 21-20. Millbrook added another in the top of the seventh to take a 22-20 lead, but Wilbraham managed to add two of their own in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score at 22-22 and send the game into extra innings. The Mustangs came close to scoring some runs in the top of the eighth but couldn’t get the runner past third, and the Titans won on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the inning. Several Mustangs had huge games - Bessinger had a triple and three singles in addition to the home run and brought in five RBI. Madison Connelly ‘19 had two doubles, two singles, and six RBI. Alyssa McLeod had a two-RBI double, Jackie Crowley ‘20 had an RBI triple, and Morgan Reed ‘22 and Helene Apollon ‘19 each had RBI as well. Millbrook made some excellent defensive plays as well, with a beautiful relay from Apollon to Bessinger to Tommi Nash ‘22 to gun down a runner at third. Connelly threw out a runner trying to steal third and picked off four others. Piper Strautman was tough on the mound and struck out eight. Millbrook will travel to Gunnery on Monday.
