Jesse M. Bontecou ’44, one of Millbrook’s distinguished graduates, died in 2020 after a long and active life as a Dutchess County resident. As a lifetime farmer at nearby Rally Farms, Jesse was never happier than when he was on his tractor—a place where he could be found well into his late 80s and early 90s. Jesse served on numerous non-profit and for-profit organizations, which all benefitted from his wisdom, his positive attitude, and his philanthropy.
A “no nonsense” gentleman, he dedicated his time and efforts to provide for the community he loved. Jesse’s parents, Frederic and Cornelia Bontecou, sold land to Ed and Lucy Pulling in 1929 where they founded Millbrook School and they became enduring friends and supporters in the school’s infancy. Jesse was a gifted young athlete and thrived on competitive sports including football, hockey, and sailing on the high seas. He had a real passion for animals and the Trevor Zoo. Thus, he and Millbrook were clearly suited for one another. Jesse’s quick, wry sense of humor endeared him to all his friends.
He cared deeply for this school and happily arranged for a legacy gift to our school through a Charitable Remainder Unitrust Agreement. His gift is to be used for repair, improvement, expansion, modification, modernization, or general purposes.
Jesse’s legacy and commitment to all things great and small will live on here forever.
